Discovering Domaine de Baal
Perched on the slopes of Mount Lebanon, facing the magnificent Bekaa Valley, Domaine de Baal carries a name that goes back thousands of years. Baal was the Phoenician god of fertility, rain, and agriculture.
In a land where vines grow without irrigation, where the soil holds water and the sky does the rest, that name is not just history. It is still happening.
The Terroir
The vineyard sits at 1,200 meters altitude on argilo-calcaire (clay-limestone) soils, a composition that retains water naturally through Lebanon’s long, dry summers. The altitude brings cooler temperatures and sharper day to night swings, exactly the kind of conditions that slow ripening down and build complexity into the fruit.
Planted across the estate you will find a thoughtful mix of both red and white grapes:
- Reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Cinsault
- Whites: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay
This range reflects both the ambition and the restraint of someone who truly understands what this terroir can give.
The Craft and Quality
The philosophy at Domaine de Baal is built around one simple idea: preventive action over corrective action. Get everything right in the vineyard, and the cellar takes care of itself.
Production Scale: Production stays small, around 25,000 bottles per year. Not because of limitation, but by choice. That is the kind of scale where nothing slips through unnoticed.
- 100% Organic: Farming is fully organic to protect the integrity of the land.
- Hand Harvested: All grapes are carefully picked by hand.
- Minimal Intervention: A low touch winemaking approach that lets the fruit speak without being pushed or polished, meaning no fining and no filtration.
The Story
The story of the estate spans decades. The very first plantations started in 1994, laying the foundation for what was to come. However, the true turning point arrived when Sébastien returned to Lebanon after spending several years in Saint-Émilion.
Sébastien had grown up partly in France, but it was during his time back there that he chose to pursue his studies in the field and complete several winemaking internships. While working with Jean-Claude Aubert, something clicked, he saw what wine could be when a person pours their identity into it. Armed with that mastery and vision, he returned home to take over the project, and the estate's very first vintage finally came to life in 2006. This wasn't a concept borrowed from somewhere else; it was something that could only come from this specific hillside, this specific person, and the decision to return and build something meaningful.
