New Zealand is made up of two major islands. The South island produces New Zealands top wines. The major regions on the South island are Marlborough and Otago. Marlborough produces quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, while Otago produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The most notable region on the North island is Hawkes Bay which is known for producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah.
A word on New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. There are few places on earth where all the right ingredients come together in such harmony. It is difficult to find a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that isnt good. Granted some are better than others so you still have to look, but youll be right more times than you will be wrong. Few wines go so well with seafood and shellfish like a good Sauvignon Blanc.
