New York

New York State has quickly grown into a major player in the wine industry.  30 years ago there were less than 20 wineries, today there are over 240.  New York contains 5 major wine regions and over 32,000 acres of vines.  During the summer grape growing season, the combination of the ocean in the east, and the lakes and rivers in the west cool the evenings, providing relief for the vines throughout the long hot summer day.  New York produces a wide variety grapes and therefore wines.

The Finger Lakes are known for Sparkling Wine, Riesling and Ice Wine.  Also notable is Chardonnay.

The Hudson River region produces both European and Native American grape varietals.

Lake Erie is the 2nd largest grape growing region in the United States (California is the largest) with over 20,000 acres of vines.  However, approximately 95% of the grapes grown in this region are used to make grape juice.

Long Island is known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.  Also notable are Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Gewόrztraminer.  On a side note: if you ever get a chance to visit Long Island wine country,  be sure to visit Osprey Dominion which is by far our favorite.

The Niagara Escarpment region produces Native American and American-French hybrid grape varietals.
