2007 Wines of the Year

Ahhhh, yes…It’s “that time of the year” (well ok, so it’s a little past “that time of the year”) to announce our selections for wine of the year.  But as they say in the old country (well OK we don’t know where they say it, but we’re sure they say it somewhere)… BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!  So today we announce the outstanding red and the white wines that rose to the top of our tasting pile.

Before we tell you what they are, let’s talk about the criteria with which we chose them.

We take into account the following:

  • The cost of the wine
  • The rating we gave it
  • The availability of the wine (how likely are you to find it in a store near  you)
  • The quality of the wine
  • How representative of that wine are they
  • How drinkable are they

So we pick a wine that is a great value for the price, and really delivers on taste.  We don’t pick the best wine in the world… what we do is pick the best wine in our world.

Over this past year we tasted many wines that could fit that bill, but only two rose to the very top of the list.  They were picked because they were of great value for the price.  In each case we would have gladly paid more than we did.  They were also quite representative of the wine made from their grapes but were so much more.  They were both excellent wines to drink with food or alone.  In short, they had everything you’d want in a wine; fruity, complex, flavorful and drinkable.  And both can be purchased in most large wine shops.  In almost every category, these two wines led the pack.

OK, READY?  DRUM ROLL PLEASE!

2007 WINES OF THE YEAR

WHITE:          Nobilo’s Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand

RED:              Marques de Riscal’s Rioja from Spain

The Nobilo is everything you want and expect from a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.  Fruity, aromatic, crisp, clear and totally ready to drink.  It pairs especially well with shellfish.

Here’s some of what we said in our review:

With a splash of green apple, a slight hint of lemon and grapefruit, and a finish that flirted with vanilla, this was perfect.  Drunk very cold you could more easily identify the component tastes, and as it slowly warmed to room temperature, the tastes blended to make something complex and wonderful.  Whether you drink it very cold or somewhat warmer, this is a definite 5…a must buy at any price, but at $10.99, it is a steal.  Buy. Buy, Buy!

Nobilo's Sauvignon Blanc is a symphony of flavors which all blend into something special

The Marques de Riscal is always a favorite.  Made from Spain’s best grape, the Tempranillo, it is smooth as silk, has little tannin and pairs well with most any kind of red meat or lighter meats in a hearty sauce like BBQ.

Here’s some of what we said in our review:

Consistently smooth and easy to drink, it’s like visiting an old friend.  This wine usually exhibits good berry flavors, from black cherry to plum.  The 2002 is an excellent example of this wine

Marques de Riscal is nothing if not consistent.  We reviewed the 2002 so if you can find it, buy it, but if you only find 2003 or any other year, buy it as well.  Odds are you’ll like it just as much.
