The top Riesling regions in Germany are the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Rheinhessen, Rhiengau and Pfalz regions. German Riesling is labeled with one of the following descriptions which range from least sweet to sweetest and is determined by how late in the season the grape is harvested; Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese, Beerenausslese, and Trockenbeerenauslese. German Riesling at its finest provides a true balance of fruit and mineral flavors. Excellent Riesling is also produced in the Alsace region of France in a drier style and is a great compliment to food. High quality Riesling from Washington State is produced in the sweeter style. Riesling is full of flavor and is often described as honey, citrus fruit, mineral, floral, and pineapple. Riesling is an excellent complement to food. Dry Riesling goes well with seafood, while sweeter Riesling goes well with cheeses and Asian cuisine. Riesling can also be harvested extremely late in the season producing a very sweet wine which is a great addition to dessert.
